Hyundai confirmed: 30,000 Atlas robots a year by 2028

At Investor Day, the owner of Boston Dynamics reaffirmed the plan for US production: 30,000 humanoids per year by 2028, with 25,000 already under contract. The site will be announced by year-end. The entire 2026 output is already allocated between Hyundai and Google DeepMind.

On August 26 at the annual Investor Day in Seoul, Hyundai Motor President Jose Muñoz announced the group’s robot manufacturing timeline and volumes. The US robot plant will launch in 2028 with an annual capacity of 30,000 units. The site will be announced by the end of 2026.

According to Muñoz, the first 25,000 commercial units are already confirmed—starting with the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia, joined by industrial and logistics partners. That’s about 83% of annual capacity, meaning the group will initially be the largest customer for its own robots. Atlas will enter mass production in Georgia in 2028, and at other plants worldwide from 2030.

Preparation is underway at the RMAC (Robot Metaplant Application Center), opened in the US in June. By year-end, it’s set to expand nearly tenfold. The center trains robots on real production tasks, collects data, and tests them before they hit the line. Hyundai is also considering robot sales through its dealer network and financing via Hyundai Capital, but models, prices, and timelines are yet to be announced.

The serial version of Atlas by Boston Dynamics debuted at CES in January 2026. This fully electric humanoid offers 56 degrees of freedom, 2.3 m reach, and up to 50 kg payload. It operates from −20 to +40 °C, swaps its own batteries, and connects to MES and WMS via Orbit software. Production started at headquarters in Boston, with the entire 2026 volume allocated to Hyundai and Google DeepMind; drives are supplied by Hyundai Mobis.

For the market, the takeaway is clear: over the next two years, Atlas remains an internal solution for Hyundai and select partners. Boston Dynamics plans to accept external orders from early 2027, but mass availability will follow the US plant launch. For now, it’s an industry benchmark, not a product you can order.
